Dear Amigos Family,

​

I am writing to you with a very heavy heart. The New York Times has published an exposé of crimes and sexual violence committed by César Chávez, and I wanted you to hear this from me, directly, honestly, and with love.

​

We are shocked and deeply dismayed by this news. We grieve for the survivors. And we stand with them, fully and without hesitation.

​

We also want to acknowledge that this movement, which began in this neighborhood, was never the work of one individual alone. It was built by a community, by people who responded to the pain and suffering of their neighbors. This neighborhood, our neighborhood, is built by people like you. By farmworkers and mothers, families, students, by neighbors who showed up for each other, by organizers who refused to let this community be forgotten. That legacy belongs to this community, to us. It cannot be and will not be taken away.

Amigos de Guadalupe exists because justice demands it!

That has not changed. It will never change.

​

The work we do every day, sitting with a family in crisis, helping a child find their footing, standing between a neighbor and a system designed to exclude them, that is the real movement, we are the movement, we are Amigos. Not a name. Not a myth. Not a legend. You.

​

As more comes to light, we will hold space for grief and honest conversation. We will not rush past the pain because confronting it is part of what justice requires of us. And we will keep showing up, as we always have, for our community.

Querida familia de Amigos,

Les escribo con el corazón muy apesadumbrado. Ayer el periodico New York Times publicó una investigación sobre crímenes y violencia sexual cometidos por César Chávez, y quería que lo escucharan de mí, directamente, con honestidad y con amor.

​

Estamos conmocionados y profundamente consternados por esta noticia. Lloramos por las sobrevivientes. Y estamos con ellas, completamente y sin vacilación.

​

También queremos reconocer que este movimiento, que comenzó en este vecindario, nunca fue obra de una sola persona. Fue construido por una comunidad, por personas que respondieron al dolor y al sufrimiento de sus vecinos. Este vecindario, nuestro vecindario, está construido por personas como ustedes. Por trabajadores campesinos y madres, familias, estudiantes, por vecinos que se presentaron unos por otros, por organizadores que se negaron a dejar que esta comunidad fuera olvidada. Ese legado le pertenece a esta comunidad, a nosotros. No nos lo pueden ni nos lo van a quitar.

¡Amigos de Guadalupe existe porque la justicia lo exige!

Eso no ha cambiado. Nunca cambiará.

​

El trabajo que hacemos cada día, sentarnos con una familia en crisis, ayudar a un niño a encontrar su camino, interponernos entre un vecino y un sistema que está diseñado para excluirlo, ese es el verdadero movimiento, nosotros somos el movimiento, somos Amigos. No un nombre. No un mito. No una leyenda. Ustedes.

​

A medida que salga más a la luz, crearemos espacio para el duelo y la conversación honesta. No pasaremos por alto el dolor, porque confrontarlo es parte de lo que la justicia nos exige. Y seguiremos presentándonos, como siempre lo hemos hecho, por nuestra comunidad.
